Preventing malaria during pregnancy in Africa

Approximately 52 million pregnant women living in sub-Saharan Africa are at risk of exposure to malaria each year. A key preventive therapy – known as intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) – has been added to the antenatal care package in response. An estimated 69% of pregnant women are not receiving the full cycle of IPTp however, a gap which must be urgently closed.

In 2015, there were 212 million cases of malaria worldwide.


Incidence - 21%
Between 2010 and 2015, there was global decrease in malaria incidence.


Mortality - 29%
Between 2010 and 2015, there was decrease in global malaria mortality rates.
