Occupational Health Risk Assessment

Occupational Health Risk Assessment (HRA) is a partnership between occupational medical advisors, occupational hygiene advisors, managers and operational staff, with each (depending on the circumstances) bringing knowledge, experience and skills to the process. Someone has to lead and that is often an occupational medical specialist.

The International Council of Mining & Metals (ICMM) describes Occupational Health Risk Assessment (HRA) as “the structured and systematic identification and analysis of workplace hazards to assess their potential risks to health and determine appropriate control measures to protect the health and wellbeing of workers”.

Healthy Mining goes beyond the basic hazard identification, risk assessment, analysis and controls approach: We develop and implement an Occupational Health Management Plan, which includes concepts such as Risk Based Medical Surveillance and Fitness to Work.  The objective is a healthy, safe and productive workforce.

Healthy Mining has undertaken project Health Impact Assessments (HIA) and developed Community Health Management Plans in  Ghana, Mali, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Columbia.  At most of these mines the Community Health Management Plan and the Occupational Health Management Plan have been combined into a Comprehensive Health Management Plan, implementation of which optimises the use of scarce resources.
